I ran carrier floors long enough to know the difference between freight work and busywork.
The freight work was reading a carrier, catching a bad rate, calming down a customer, or knowing when a load was about to go sideways. The busywork was everything around it: copying lane details, checking three systems, sending the same follow-up, updating the TMS, and doing it all again 10 minutes later.
We got used to that setup because there wasn’t another one. Every system handled one piece of the job, and the rep had to hold the whole operation together. Good people became the connection between software that couldn’t connect on its own.
I didn’t start Envoy because brokers needed another screen. They had enough screens. I started it because the work around the decision was eating up the day, and none of the existing tools could take ownership of it.

A TMS knows a reefer load needs a truck at 4 p.m. It can show you the rate, pickup window, customer notes, and carrier history. But when the booked truck falls off, it doesn’t start calling carriers, work through objections, negotiate a replacement rate, or verify the new option. It waits for a rep to do all of that, then records the result.
Freight brokerages have spent years asking one system to cover two separate jobs: remembering what happened and making the next thing happen. The TMS was built for the first. Your people have been carrying the second.
The Work Fell to People, One Screen at a Time
And they carried it one screen at a time.
A rep would open the TMS for the load details, jump to two load boards for capacity, work the inbox for replies, then bounce through carrier portals to check insurance, status, and paperwork. Dispatchers and night shift teams ran the same circuit whenever something changed after hours.
We called this a workflow, but that made it sound far more intentional than it was. Most of the time, it was a person manually passing information between systems that had no idea the others existed.
Nobody sat down and designed freight brokerage this way. It happened gradually as each new tool solved one narrow problem without taking responsibility for the whole job. The work spread across more screens, more logins, and more handoffs.
The reps became the glue because there was nothing else to be the glue.
The Execution Layer Is Where the Work Moves Now
Once you see the rep as the missing connection between every system, the next piece becomes obvious. Someone, or something, has to sit above the TMS, load boards, inbox, and carrier portals and carry the work across them.
That’s the execution layer.
It doesn’t rip out the software a brokerage already depends on. It gives that software a way to act. Capacity gets sourced, carriers get contacted, rates get worked inside the broker’s rules, credentials get checked, and the booking keeps moving without a rep dragging every step from one screen to the next.

The usual response is familiar: hire ahead of the volume, add seats as fast as possible, then cut them when the cycle cools again. Plenty of good operators have lived through that pattern more than once.
The execution layer gives brokerages another way to grow. It lets the existing team handle more freight without rebuilding the same oversized floor that became painful during the downturn. Volume can return without every extra load requiring another person to push it through five systems.
The Boss of Machines
When the software does the doing, the job at the top changes with it. The person running a carrier floor stops overseeing 20 people sending emails and starts overseeing a set of agents doing the sending, with a smaller, sharper team owning the results.
I’ve started calling that person the Boss of Machines. Same chair you’re in now, running a very different animal. You set the guardrails the agents work inside, you watch what they do, and you step in on the calls that need real judgment.
The reps don’t vanish in that picture. Their job climbs, from pushing tasks around to owning the rate, the carrier, and the customer, which is the job the good ones wanted all along.
Where This Leaves You
The operating system under freight has already changed. Most of the industry is just still running the old one out of habit, hiring into the upturns and cutting into the softenings, treating the filing cabinet like it’s the whole business.
